As the AMA Supermoto Championship winds down its second season (the last race is coming up in Las Vegas), it is hard to see the series moving to larger venues anytime soon. For the most part, the series more closely resembles the roots of Supermoto here in the US, i.e., makeshift, parking lot tracks with relatively low, paid attendance.
Supercross in the United States is huge, on the other hand. High ticket prices, and sold-out 50,000-seat stadiums are the norm.
Supermoto would need to move to stadium venues, like Supercross, and attract both hardcore and casual fans to achieve similar attendance figures. An alternative would be to cordon off city streets and charge fans to watch as the racers negotiate an urban course similar to the recent Reno round of the AMA series.
Is it possible for Supermoto to achieve a similar level of fan popularity to Supercross? Can you picture Supermoto drawing a sold-out audience at an American, Major-League Baseball stadium, such as Anaheim Stadium? Send us an email with your thoughts.
