072113top-i

Rookie Marc Marquez (Honda) won his second race in a row (the youngest rider ever to do so in the premier class) at Laguna Seca earlier today. Stefan Bradl (Honda) started from pole position, but was eventually passed by Marquez and finished in second place.  Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi finished third.  In the “battled of the injured collarbones”, Dani Pedrosa (Honda) finished in fifth position, just ahead of Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) in sixth.  Marquez continues to lead the championship points.

I can also confirm from the paddock that Marquez went to the Rossi school of fan appreciation. He really stopped for as many photos and autographs as possible. Another reason nobody will miss Stoner.

I have to join the folks deeply impressed by Marquez. He doesn’t have quite the fun loving insanity of the early Rossi but he seems to have everything else you could want in a MotoGP rider. I figured a while ago I would be done with MotoGP in a few years, after Rossi, Edwards and Hayden retired what would be left to watch? Now it looks like the answer is Marc Marquez.

Now this guy needs a good nickname. Does he have a nickname in Span now? Based on the conversation at the beginning of this article I’ll suggest “The New Doctor In Town” or just “New-Doc” for short. Anybody got a better idea?

Bradl was out of the gates like a scalded cat. It was a joy to watch Marquez pass Rossi and commence chase of Bradl. Then to catch and pass him and win the race. But the best thing is to see what a great smile Marquez had at the end, I think he even said he is ready to go again! What a contrast to Stoner, or old sour-puss Pedrosa. This young guy is great. He doesn’t seem full of himself and he has a good time. Aliens? What aliens?

This was a good race to watch from the turn 11 grandstands. there were a few other races to watch during this one. The battle between the Ducatis for 8th place was entertaining, especially as they were bumping elbows at 160 mph over the crest of the hill towards turn 1, and Rossi holding off Bautista. I’m sure it was a satisfying result for Hayden however. Great weekend altogether!

  5. Gary says:

Marquez showed patience and maturity in tracking down and passing Bradl. That is a very troubling sign for his competition.

  6. mickey says:

Marquez is certainly the real deal. He has adapted to the big bikes and new tracks a little too easily. Loved the move in the corkscrew, reminded one of Rossi passing Stoner there. Bradl looked amazing as did Bautista. Rossi rode well. Saw where Crutchlow said last year he would have pushed till he crashed, so he is maturing. 7 th is certainly better than a wadded up bike and no points. Pedrosa and Lorenzo put on heroic performances.

Feel sorry for Crutchlow, Bradl,,Dovisioso, Bautista etc … the new class of racers are going to have to eat Marquez leftovers for some time to come .

Dang, now a months wait until the next race.

  7. Tony W says:

Marc Marquez is the youngest rider to win back to back races in the premier class. I am going to go out on a limb and say he will be the youngest rider to win back to back to back championships in the premier class.

  8. Alon Walker says:

Still amazed by Lorenzo’s performance with his two operations. Just unbelievable …

  9. Montana says:

Marquez out-Rossi’d Rossi in the corkscrew.

    • Norm G. says:

yes, that would be the intended headline.

    • Neil says:

Rossi got corkscrewed! – Impressive to see Marquez go the wrong way as if it were the right way. Rossi was a bit peeved but he used to pull the same moves; see Gibernau in Spain. I think Marquez went to Medical School as well. He can ride!

    • Corpus Frisky says:

I dunno. I’m beginning to get a creepy feeling about this. Marquez is batting around the aliens like they are cat toys. Alien 2.0?

There is a lot of evidence to suggest his pass of Rossi in that manner was completely premeditated. Earlier in the week he was photographed up at the corkscrew on a scooter checking out the area in the dirt that he rode through. In practice it looked like he blew the turn and rode that line at near race speed. Maybe that wasn’t an accident. A trial run? I am even suspicious of his poor start from the front row. Was that just to ensure Rossi would be ahead of him so he could hatch his plan? The mind boggles to think he could be doing this, but I swear I’m not crazy. I really think it went down like that the more I look at it.
