Slow(er) and Steady Wins the Race – and Maybe the Championship

Most fans have spent this year’s AMA Supercross series wrapped up in a drama as gripping as any TV miniseries – yes, I’m talking about ‘the James and Ricky show’. Meanwhile, not exactly out of sight but certainly out of mind (at least for a lot of fans), Yamaha’s Chad Reed was plugging away, and although he wasn’t able to consistently run the same pace as Carmichael and Stewart, most of the time he was significantly quicker than the rest of the pack.

While Reed has only won two races this season (compared to Carmichael’s and Stewart’s six wins each), he has finished on the podium in all but two of the fourteen races so far – and in both those races, he finished fifth. In comparison, Carmichael had one twentieth-place finish and one sixth, while Stewart had one seventeenth-place finish, one eighth, and one sixth.

By virtue of this consistency, Chad now sits in second place in the points race, trailing points leader Ricky Carmichael by only two points with just two rounds left. All of this means that Reed may just prove the old adage from which I paraphrased the title of this article, and his rivals may pay a dear price for the incredible pace forced upon them by their fierce battle.
