Some Fans May Underestimate The Seriousness of Concussions

When we heard about James Stewart’s crash at High Point on Sunday, and read eyewitness reports that he was unconscious for a short period after the crash, it reminded us of some research we’d done a few years ago regarding concussions and their affect on the brain.

We get the feeling that a significant number of people don’t consider a concussion to be a serious injury; the typical attitude seems to be ‘okay, he didn’t break any bones, so no big deal’. In reality, a concussion is a very serious injury, and receiving multiple concussions (even over a relatively long period of time) can be even worse.

For more info, check out Dirck’s article from July 2001, discussing the issues which arose from the numerous concussions Travis Pastrana had received in a short period preceeding the article.
