James Stewart Already in Driver’s Seat for 2007 AMA Supercross Crown

Only 3 of 16 races have been completed, but the handwriting is already on the wall. Kawasaki’s James Stewart is dominating the AMA Supercross series with 3 straight victories. Not only that, the only rider currently capable of challenging Stewart is a part-timer named Ricky Carmichael (Suzuki).

Carmichael is racing “selected rounds” and will not be a title threat with the points he will miss. Yamaha’s Chad Reed is the only potential threat to Stewart, and Reed has been struggling with injuries suffered in practice a few weeks ago. At this point, Reed cannot run Stewart’s pace. Indeed, it looks like Stewart can ride well within himself and still beat Reed.

Anything can happen in supercross, of course, and injuries are the number one contingency. Riders get hurt all the time these days. Practice tracks are just as gnarly as the race tracks built for each Saturday night main event. Barring injury, however, it looks like James Stewart is prepared to run away with this year’s championship, and even make many of the races boring.
