Despite a nasty crash on the final day involving Jason DiSalvo (resulting in an elbow injury that should heal before testing resumes next year), Yamaha has to be pleased with the results of the recently concluded tire test in Daytona. Why?
Eric Bostrom feels confident on his “new” bike. After frustrating and failed efforts to develop the YZF-R1 last year as a superbike, the U.S. race team looked for input from the much more successful WSB Yamaha team. The results are improved confidence in the bike for both Bostrom and DiSalvo.
Although the Suzukis of Mat Mladin and Ben Spies again took the top two lap times at this test, Bostrom was third quickest on the all-new set up for the R1. He was also just a tick off the top speed of the Suzukis on the finish line straight.
All this points to the potential for a more competitive AMA Superbike series next year.
