Yea no kidding. Sometimes when I see him pulling into the pits during a GP race I can imagine him saying “Yea, I don’t really feel like racing today Dad”.
Then again, I could be wrong.
Great riding in those vids, but both had annoying music I had to turn off. Even lame metal would have been better than the over-dramatic cheap-sounding keys.

Helps them get weight forward to load up the front tyre and unweigh the back so they can steer with the rear wheel as well

Yep, need more SM in the states.
On feet out. Think cat tail, or squirrel tail. I do it for balance. Not to actually kick or slide on the ground. But if you start to slide out, sometimes all you need to do is move your leg fast to catch the slide by shifting your weight. Much the same way you move around on a dirtbike a lot to maintain balance. Also, the pegs on SMs are quite low. At extreme angles, there just is no room for your foot on the peg.
At the speed these racers are going, especially on pavement, I don’t understand why they still stick out their feet. I know AMA flat-trackers do that, with their steel hot-shoes, but these guys are turning right as well as left, and they’re on pavement as well as dirt. Would there really be a chance to kick out in time to save a sliding bike, or are these extended feet just being used as curb feelers?
To me, it feels much more natural to do that on a dirt bike, a bike with a fraction of the mass of a typical street bike with ergonomics that are a fair bit different.
Ever tried it?
I’ve heard it’s to allow more weight transfer and clearance. There’s no room for a foot under there.
I’m thinking the foot out allows the rider to quickly and subtly adjust balance as the bike is sliding.
I really really really wish supermoto was big in the states! Too cool!
