The juggernaut known as Ricky Carmichael (Honda) rolled on into the AMA National Motocross Championship today at Glen Helen Raceway in Southern California. The top three finishers were identical in each 250 class moto, with Carmichael first, Sebastien Tortelli (Honda) second, and Tim Ferry (Yamaha) third. Carmichael dominated each moto – winning by substantial margins.
In the 125 class, Kawasaki’s James Stewart made his professional outdoor debut a success. In the first moto, Stewart took the lead early from KTM’s Grant Langston, and cruised to victory. In the second moto, defending 125 national champion Mike Brown had a close battle with Stewart, but ultimately pulled a significant gap, leaving Stewart with second place. Stewart took the overall with a consistent 1/2, while Langston took second overall with 3/3 finishes. Yamaha’s Chad Reed rode hard, but had poor starts (virtually last after one lap in Moto 2) and finished third overall with 2/6 finishes.
