Wet weather at Silverstone, as it often does, shook up the points battle in the MotoGP class earlier today. Co-leader in the championship at the start of the day, Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi won the race and put a 12-point cushion between himself and teammate Jorge Lorenzo, who finished fourth. The Ducatis of Danillo Petrucci and Andrea Dovizioso finished second and third, respectively.
Marc Marquez (Honda) further dashed his hopes of repeating as champion this year by crashing out of the race. This championship will almost certainly be decided between Lorenzo and Rossi. I didn’t get a chance to see MM’s bike after the crash. I was wondering why he gave up? Not that he had a chance of a podium, but he made no attempt to continue.
He did not want to be late for his afternoon nap.

I expected to see Rossi just exhausted after that race. But instead, MM & JLo have given him new life that will make it all the harder to beat him for the rest of the season. Amazing stuff from the old guy.

Minimum age for a MotoGP racer is 18, half of Rossi’s age. Rossi’s been racing MotoGPs for 18 years. There was a rider on the podium last weekend in Moto 3 that was 15 years old. That means Rossi had been racing for 3 years before that racer was even born. Marquez won his first world championship 2 years ago at 20 years old. Comparatively speaking, in the highly competitive motorcycle racing game, Rossi is a virtual fossil.

The youngest rider to start a race in the world championship is Rossi’s team mate Jorge Lorenzo, who was 15 years and a day old when he raced at the Spanish GP at Jerez in 2002.

Somebody get JLo an insert quick! He’s making HJC look bad..I’m sure he has a nice contract so he ain’t ditching brands. I had an HJC helmet. I used it for the MSF class and a backup helmet and that pretty much sums up my opinion of them.
Helluva race. Rossi looked awesome … just fast enough to win without every really even getting out of shape once. It was a true master class in how to ride in the rain.
Lorenzo made motion to a fogged up visor. I wonder if that was the difference?
Second time this season Jorge has claimed to have had helmet problems. You know, maybe it’s time he trades in that piece of crap X-Lite for a nice Arai.

Seriously though- Lorenzo was not wearing a nose piece- you can’t minimise fog without wearing a nose piece, which by the way as Chris Vermeulian stated on commentary everyone else had them on except Lorenzo, and it’s not the first time for Lorenzo, so WTF!
Somebody messed up in JLo’s camp if he wasn’t wearing a nose piece. Man, that’s just plain dumb!

I can’t make out what happened. I’m sure an expert can. I would have figured the rear end would break loose to cause a crash in he wet but it looks instead like the front end ‘grabbed’ and straightened the bike upright, bam, just like that.
Watching the race it looked like the front end started to push, Marquez stood it up and it tucked and high sided him. But it was so fast, hard to tell exactly.
Rossi was fortunate this was a rain race.. Gives him a small amount of cushion, but not too much. lets hope it’s enough.
Looked like MM was closing on VR, then a brief loss of front tire traction, followed immediately by the high-side. Ouch!
It looks like the rear wanted to pass the front, and he lost it when trying to correct. That’s the way MM described it as well.
That’s how it looked to me as well. I bet he was too hard on the throttle.
Petrucci makes for a great interview, btw. Funny bugger. You can tell he’s an ex-cop just by looking at him. Wanted to grab the old guitar and play some classic “Hollywood police car-chase” funk riffs when he was chasing down Rossi.

I’d go so far as to say on one hand I would’ve preferred this result in the dry, total mastery of the problem right? yet they race in rain and mastering THAT is part of racing too. VR is showing his overall mastery here – come on championship!!!

Rossi has, as i have mentioned before, superior wet track capabilities. His confidence in his riding ability and equipment is superlative. What was he last race, 10sec down? Now he is + 3 seconds ahead. He has always done better on a wet track than the next guy.
+1, some of his most devastating wet weather rides happened back in the inaugural year of 4T. I believe the Suzuka opener of ’02 was full wet…? then later that year in Estoril. I remember CALLING him Jesus Christ, not just “calling out” Jesus Christ.

When it rains Rossi shines and shows the youngsters how its done.
At least this season it seems that every time Marquez and Rossi get into a mana-a-mano scrap, Rossi comes out on top. On the other hand, unless Lorenzo has clear track ahead of him he tends to fall off the pace and lose touch with the leaders. Meanwhile, Rossi seems less affected by the race conditions. If he starts poorly, he comes through traffic and either catches the leaders or falls a bit short to finish in third. If he’s with the leaders from the start, he wins. Marquez is the wild card. Sometimes he falls, sometimes he bides his time and pounces late on his way to a convincing win, and sometimes he simply can’t quite keep pace with Lorenzo.
On his best days, when everything is working just right, Lorenzo clearly has the measure of Rossi. The qualifying sessions are where he stamps his authority. He qualifies on pole, or at least on the front row ahead of Rossi, and often grabs the holeshot and leads wire to wire. Absent that blueprint, he suffers.
Rossi just keeps grabbing podiums. What is that now, fourteen in a row? Or is it seventeen? Something like that. Sprinkle in the occasional win and Vale’s level of consistency looks like it may very well trump Jorge’s mercurial flashes of brilliance.
And next up is Misano, Rossi’s home track, and Valentino won there last year. If the rest of the season beyond Misano follows form, this next race in Italy may decide the championship. If Valentino manages to win again and stretch his lead to seventeen or more points, it’s going to take something drastic to keep #46 from winning championship #10.
Yep absolutely. While controlling qualifying and zooming away on a clear track is the obvious goal, whenever anything goes differently than “100% perfect” VR is there when MM and JL are not.

I’m glad he got a win. I hope it’s not just a rain thing. Now if he can just stay ahead of his teammate. I’d love it even more if he was doing this on Ducati.

No, it’s not just a rain thing. However, rain is definitely his ally, especially against Lorenzo. One can be certain Jorge is hoping for no more dicey weather the rest of the season.
Or anything less than qualifying on pole and running away. That’s the only time JL seems to be able to control the race.
Didn’t this tie him and Jorge for wins? I was kinda worried about them tying on points and Jorge having more wins. Nobody rides shagged tires as well as he does, and rain is his friend. Now if he can just qualify. His only weakness(?) is he is too smart to push cold tires like the kids. I believe that’s his qualifying problem. It’s turning out to be one of the better seasons in quite awhile.

-based on historical data and current performance we are inclined to believe the championship will be decided between Lorenzo and Rossi- seems more adequate, anyone can have an accident or get involved in one.
