Monster Energy Supercross Historical Notes Package – Race 4 – O.Co Coliseum – Oakland, CA

Monster Energy SX_012816

Oakland first hosted Monster Energy Supercross in 1979, then again in 1980 and in 1984. From 2003-2010 it was across the Bay Bridge at AT&T Park before returning to the Coliseum in 2011.

Last season the Coliseum became one of just two stadiums where siblings have won, with Malcolm Stewart (250SX) joining his brother James (450SX) on the venue’s all-time winners list.

Although it opened the same year as Angel Stadium in 1966, O.co Coliseum is considered the second-oldest stadium on the schedule. The Raiders started the season in September, while the Angels started in April.

O.co Coliseum is the only stadium in the country to serve as the home of both an MLB (Oakland Athletics) and NFL franchise (Oakland Raiders).

450SX Class

2015 Podium: Trey Canard, Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed

The first 450SX Class race held in Oakland was on January 18, 1979. Jimmy Weinert won on a Kawasaki.

In 1979, the Oakland Supercross track was made entirely of sand.

James Stewart won Oakland back-to-back in ’11-’12 on a Yamaha. Ryan Villopoto won the next two Oakland races from ’13-’14 on a Kawasaki. Can Trey Canard go back-to-back on his Honda?

There has never been a rider win both a 250SX and 450SX Class race in Oakland. Jason Anderson, Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac are all 250SX Class winners in Oakland with the opportunity to win in the 450SX Class on Saturday.

The winner of the Oakland Supercross has gone on to win the 450SX Class championship just twice, both by Villopoto in 2013 & 2014.

James Stewart would become the winningest rider in Oakland with a victory on Saturday.

There has never been a first-time 450SX Class winner in Oakland.
