Valentino Rossi was back on track again today at Misano aboard an R1 superbike. This time, he completed 20 laps and left with a good feeling. After a medical check tomorrow, he will make a final decision regarding his participation next weekend at the Aragón MotoGP event. Here is the latest press release from the Movistar Yamaha Team:
Gerno di Lesmo (Italy), 19th September 2017 – Having ridden his first laps around the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli yesterday, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi was back aboard his YZF-R1M today at 3:30pm (GMT+2) to resume his physical test.
During the two-hour private riding session the nine-time World Champion was able to complete 20 laps in total. He wrapped up this second day of testing with an improved feeling and a more positive impression compared to yesterday.
Tomorrow Rossi will undergo a medical examination – to verify the positive rehabilitation progress experienced in today’s session – after which he will make a final decision on his attempt to take part in the Gran Premio Movistar de Aragón. A further update will be given after the Italian’s check-up.

My prediction is Rossi will ride, nothing bad will happen, he will pick up some points. I think he will be lucky to break the top 10, but we are talking about Rossi here, so anything is possible. Good luck, looking forward to another great race!
He’s now cleared to race.

The bones will have been plated and screwed to stabilise the fractures and allow Mr Rossi to do what he is paid to do. There is low risk of affecting the healing process at the original fractures however a major “off” could cause problems.
Mr Rossi may have a sore leg at times but he wouldn’t be the first rider to use painkillers to compete. Lotta old ladies on here wringing their hands and seeing the portents of doom
re: “however a major “off” could cause problems…”
…FULLSTOP.
Old ladies wringing their hands? Screws and plates are designed to stabilize during healing, not take the full load of g-forces while racing. I assume Rossi will not be running 110% race pave, but he is not exactly washing puppies out there…
Ok to pick up some points, but be careful VR!
Not smart if that bone breaks again and it can’t grow back as happened to a friend of mine and other racers who lost an inch of their leg. It’s hard enough to race healthy. There is no margin of error. No normal doctor would ok this.
No human being would stack books like this.
Racing is already dangerous, that much we know. To throw a freshly healing injury on top of razor thin margin of error, and the inevitable readjustment of balance/effort/use to compensate for the tenderness and fear of re-injuring that limb, and not let it affect focus and judgement makes me super nervous. It sounds impossible. It’s a combination that I see as being overly risky, not heroic, in my book.
In this case in particular, I don’t think Rossi should race. He could do real, lasting, and permanent damage should something go wrong. And it wouldn’t take much. As we know other racer’s actions are not something he can control or manage, and the stakes don’t get higher at this level of competition.
Don’t do it Rossi. You have nothing to prove at this stage of your illustrious career.
re: “As we know other racer’s actions are not something he can control or manage”
as he knows from his BFF Simo, the life he affects may not be his own.
That is all true. But in the back of Rossi’s mind are lingering thoughts of possibilities of DNFs or injuries from the current front runners and that looming number 10.
He just has to ride because it’s the only answer for him. I bet he’s thinking that he will at least score points and anything can happen including MM breaking a bone too.
Smart or not, the fellow has a big set of balls.
I was decapitated once, put my head back on, then went to lunch with a friend – then realized I put it on backwards. Not to worry. My friend paid for lunch. All things considered, it was a good day.
“Stay down, champ…”
This is madness. Cherish your health Vale. There are going to be many years after your racing career that you’ll want two good legs for.
I agree.
PR & Marketing 101…
A. Devise (internally) a possible/probable game plan.
B. Market it (externally) as a “wishful thinking” impossibility.
Outcome 1. It doesn’t come to pass, you lose nothing. It was “wishful thinking” anyway.
Outcome 2. You are released to race, the loyalists elevate you to superhuman status.
BTW – not discounting or diminishing his tremendous talent or race craft in any way.
Rep sees the scam (and OBEYS).
I want to say that in practically any other sport Rossi’s injuries would mean he would be done for the season, but I listened to a report yesterday on the radio about a Seattle Seahawks’ receiver who suffered a dual-compound fracture of one of his fingers. We’re talking bones sticking through the skin, blood everywhere, the whole nine yards.
Dude went to the locker room, wrapped it up, probably received a shot of painkiller, and went right back out and played again, even catching more passes and taking the hits.
These guys are animals.
Kinda puts the antics you see in soccer matches into perspective.
