Ricky Carmichael (Suzuki) won both motos and clinched the 2006 AMA Motocross championship today at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center in New York. The podium was identical after both motos, with James Stewart (Kawasaki) finishing second and Kevin Windham (Honda) finishing third. Carmichael secures the title with two rounds still remaining.
In the hotly contested Lites class, Mike Alessi (KTM) had a disasterous day after crashing out of the first moto, and fighting his way to fourth place in the second moto. He lost a total of 25 points to rival Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) on the day. The overall winner in the Lites class today was Broc Hepler (Suzuki) with 1/3 moto scores. Villopoto finished second overall (4/1), while rookie phenom Josh Hill finished third overall (Yamaha; 2/5) in only his second National event. Villopoto leaves Brome-Tioga with a 20 point lead over Alessi in the championship.
