The AMA Supercross Series returned to Anaheim tonight for the third round of the freshly minted season. In the Lites class, Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) continued his impressive run of podium finishes, taking a win tonight to add to his win at Anaheim I and second-place finish last week in Phoenix. Jason Lawrence (Yamaha) took second place, a full 21.58 seconds behind Villopoto, and closely followed by Joshua Hill (Yamaha) in third.
In the Supercross class, James Stewart (Kawasaki) added another win to an early season that has been even more impressive than Villopoto’s – this is his third first-place finish in the three races that have been run so far! Yamaha’s Chad Reed, still feeling the effects of pre-season injuries, crossed the line 13.05 seconds behind Stewart to take second place. Nick Wey (Honda) took the final podium spot in third.
The two winners tonight have both dominated their respective classes so far this season, and are likewise dominating the championship points race. Villopoto leads the Lites points with 72 points to Jason Lawrence’s 55, while Stewart leads the Supercross class with 75 points to Reed’s 62.
